Experience Hiking Angels Landing in Zion Nat'l Park

Hiking Angels Landing is one of those experieces that will make you feel alive and, when you look back, wonder how you didn’t die.

The Angels Landing Trail, nestled in the heart of Zion National Park, is an awe-inspiring hike that promises both exhilarating adventure and breathtaking vistas. Spanning approximately 5 miles round trip, this trail is not for the faint-hearted due to its steep inclines and narrow paths. However, for those who brave it, the rewards are unparalleled.

You’ll gain about 1,488 feet (453 meters) of elevation from the trailhead to the summit over the hike, including steep switchbacks and the challenging ascent along the narrow spine leading to the peak. The significant elevation gain, combined with the trail's challenging terrain, contributes to the hike's reputation as both strenuous and rewarding.

Our journey began at the Grotto trailhead, where we were immediately greeted with a series of switchbacks known as Walter's Wiggles. These 21 tight turns are an engineering marvel, offering a steady climb to Refrigerator Canyon, a welcome shady respite. Here, the path evens out, allowing you to catch your breath before the next ascent.

As the trail progresses, it narrows dramatically, leading to Scout Lookout. This is where the real challenge begins. The final half-mile to Angels Landing is not for those who fear heights. At times, just a few feet wide, the path clings to the side of sheer cliffs, with chains bolted into the rock to aid you. I am unashamed to admit that I took this part nice and slow, and This section required careful navigation, a steady hand, and careful foot placement.

Upon reaching the summit, we were rewarded with a 360-degree panorama of Zion Canyon. The view from Angels Landing is iconic, offering a stunning perspective of the Virgin River winding through the canyon floor below and the vast array of rock formations that make Zion famous.

In June 2016, I hiked Angel's Landing in Zion National Park with friends. After completing the switchbacks, which were no problem, I got to Scouts Lookout before anyone else, and while waiting I psyched myself out. The heights, as well as the narrowness of the chained trail, felt incredibly intimidating. The video starts with friends hyping me up... and I'm grateful to them for getting me going because it still is one of the most unforgettable and rewarding hiking experiences I’ve ever had!

While challenging, Angels Landing is immensely popular, drawing hikers from around the world. It’s a blend of natural beauty and adrenaline-inducing paths, and the best part is the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit.
